What is a Kubotan?

Although most people visiting this site will already be familiar with kubotans, for those who are not, they are self defence keyrings developed in the 60's by Takayuki Kubota, a Japanese American Karate master. He in turn got the concept from his father, who made little sticks out of bamboo for the same purpose. They are generally held with a closed fist, point down, and can be used for both for strikes and for applying pressure to soft spots. If keys are attached, they can even be used as a flail e.g. to rake across the face. Kubotans have been used by law enforcement, but are better known as a favoured weapon of Krav Maga, a fighting system developed by the Israeli Defence Force. In general, kubotans are highly effective self defence tools, and their size and keyring functionality make them an easy daily carry.

Why Wood?

Because they look better, feel nicer, and there is no real downside. My wooden kubotans are seriously strong - I cannot break them if I try. But also, especially with some of the designs here, they look less threatening. Less like offensive weapons. And that can be helpful... All the kubotans here are designed and made in the UK, for more info see Why Wood and How they are Made.
